What The Bloggers Think:

With a nearly two hour running time, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins long overstays its welcome. A movie where the comedic highlight is two dogs making wild love does not need to be almost as long as your standard Oscar-bait epic. The movie’s climax concerns Roscoe making a surprise visit at his parents’ anniversary dinner, where he makes a heartfelt speech about love and family. Severed ties are repaired, relationships are rekindled, and the movie is over. The last part was my favorite.

Martin Lawrence is a lot like Eddie Murphy in the way he has ruined his own career with a series of very bad movies, and made people forget that at one point, he was an incredibly talented and edgy stand-up comic, able to sell out stadiums all over the country.
MatchFlick

Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins is an overlong, cliché ridden, stereotypical and predictable mess of a comedy, but somewhere under its slapstick surface is a funny movie experience. Though not a guilty pleasure by any means, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins is just overcooked in so many ways, but one can’t help laughing at this comedy from writer/director Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man).
Real Movie News

Family reunions on screen create immediate identification. We all know what it feels like to come home to our families of origin and discover how quickly those carefully-assembled grown-up personas disappear and those just-below-the-surface rivalries take over. That is why it is fun to see it happen to someone else. This set-up and a talented cast provide the engine that keeps this movie going even when the screenplay lags behind.

I wasn’t surprised to enjoy Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, which I saw (and paid for) over the weekend. Even if I haven’t really been a fan of Martin Lawrence since his sitcom went off the air, I could tell the movie would be a stupid good time. I’m a not-at-all-secret fan of Mo’Nique (I was really disappointed that Phat Girlz was so tame), and I’ll watch James Earl Jones anytime, especially as a father figure (from Darth Vader to King Jaffe Joffer to Papa Jenkins). I was, however, surprised to like it as much as I did. And apparently I wasn’t the only film writer to think so.

For an aggressively stupid slapstick comedy, “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins” is pretty funny. And it has some heart, wrapping a warm tale of family reconciliation in food fights, sucker punches and constant reaction shots from a tiny, goofy-looking dog.

What The Bloggers Think

The songbook is rather thin and all the tunes start to blend together after a while, even though Cyrus’ band is incredibly tight. The songs are respectable manufactured pop, with musical passages lifted shamelessly old tunes like “Kids in America”, something that definitely won’t bug Cyrus’ fan base as they wouldn’t know Kim Wilde from Kim Possible. With titles like “I Got Nerve”, “Nobody’s Perfect, “We Got The Party”, the message here is very clear. Cyrus/Montana brings the wholesome party, celebrating individuality with messages of hope and self-esteem.

While I’m way out of the target demographic for this 3D concert film, it’s not difficult to appreciate the Miley Cyrus hurricane. “Best of Both Worlds” is an infectious, high-energy performance picture that overcomes its rather unsavory purpose by barreling forward with a bomb of tween enthusiasm and vivid displays of over-choreographed celebration.
Overall, I thought it was a fantastic movie and it made me and my daughter more than ever wish we could have been at a concert. The movie was great, but just not the same.
True confession: I had more fun at the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Concert Tour than I’ve had in a long time at the movie theater. I think it’s safe to say that we’re seeing the beginning of a new wave in movie theaters; bringing concerts to fans in 3-D in the comfort of a movie theater, for a fraction of the ticket prices of a live concert, is going to be the Next Big Thing — so long as it’s done as well as Disney has pulled off the Hannah Montana concert.

What The Bloggers Think:

ok this is by far the best movie have i ever watch, here’s how the story goes……….Action was pretty cool. The explosions are really loud, body parts are flying around. The final action scene where Rambo gets hold of 20mm gun and kills entire squad of soldiers was awesome: those bullets split people in two. But the best thing about this movie is it is so violent in its graphic depiction of war and casualties of war, it is essentially an anti-war movie. Oh, and also I think Stallone realized that the more Rambo talks, the more pathetic and funny he is. So in this movie Rambo may have said no more then 50 words, which is great. Rambo is not Rocky. He doesn’t need to talk. Also, Stallone looks great at 61 years old - he looks 45. Must be that prescription of testosterone - he pumped up to 209 lbs (in Rambo II he weighed only 186 lbs). I also liked Rambo’s cynicism he inherited from Stallone himself: he thinks that people are inherently bad and wars will be perpetual. If people were inherently good we would not need police.

Just watch it, words don’t justify it! People didn’t believe Sly still had it, but they were so wrong. After the the great performance at Rocky Balboa I expected another great performance for him. But this was even better than I imagined. You don’t have to be an Stallone fan to enjoy this movie. If you like action movies, this one is for you. A word of caution though, this isn’t for the light hearted, there are some serious violence in this movie. I am gonna say this is one of the best action movies I have seen in a long time. But you don’t have to take my word for it, just watch it. It’s better than the previous Rambo films. Expcept for about 15 minutes in the middle, the whole film is action packed. You can’t possibly be bored. If you hate action movie or if you have something against violence, this isn’t for you. But if you are not, than sit back and enjoy the legend that is Rambo for one last time.
I really wasn’t expecting much other than an action film.

It certainly delivered in that aspect. A story was developed and quickly abandoned to make one of the most hilariously awesome films I have seen in recent years. This film didn’t leave much to the imagination, with about 7 people literally “exploding” every minute during an action sequence, Rambo killing hundreds of people with a .50 cal turret and escaping with one arm wound, people having their necks crushed, BOOM! Headshots that caused peoples’ heads to break in half, machete disembowelments, decapitations with slight hesitation so as to show the head start bleeding, arrows through eyes, arrows through necks, people being eaten by pigs, flamethrowers setting dozens of people on fire, and every other possible random death sequence imaginable, with everything being shown with an amount of gore that puts Gears of War to shame.

True enough, Rambo delivers the action. And it’s beyond my expectation! The movie is graphically gory and so realistic in all the killing/ bombing/ chopping/ shooting.. Scenes after scenes of blood and limps flying around.. *satisfied*

Acherly I was kinda surprise on the generousity of the Censorship Board in editing this movie and I am definitely not complaining. But one thing I dun really understand. After seeing all the bloody scenes, the Censorship Board decided to censor the word ‘Fuck’..

And also.. his physique is abit weird ley..

I heart 27 Dresses. It’s a cute, fun, entertaining movie. My husband went to see this with me and he laughed out loud a number of times, so this is truly a guy-friendly chick flick. The plot centers on Katherine Heigl’s character and how she has essentially become a professional bridesmaid with a closet full of 27 hideous gowns to prove it. After a chance encounter with with a handsome, cynical reporter played by James Marsden, Heigl’s character begins to uncover some repressed feelings, especially once her baby sister morphs into bridezilla.
Perhaps you have a friend who’s a little obsessive about weddings, perusing the Sunday social pages with unnatural interest, reading about other people’s engagements and weddings as passionately as some folks follow their favorite sports teams. If you’ve never met a woman like this, you might not believe it’s possible for a normal, intelligent woman to harbor such an obsession for the whole idea of weddings, but they do exist, and 27 Dresses delves into the world of one such fictional woman, Jane (Katherine Heigl), while also pulling of the rather neat trick of making the very attractive Heigl appear to be the less attractive, more serious older sister to sexy blond baby sister Tess (Malin Akerman, who previously was a bright spot on Lisa Kudrow’s short-lived HBO series The Comeback).
It got slammed in the reviews. Then, this weekend, when I stopped by my favorite neighborhood boutique to gawk at cute dresses on my way to the theatre, even the salesgirl started in: “It was awful. You wouldn’t believe the things that came out of these characters’ mouths!” And yet, three friends and I were still hell-bent on seeing the new Kathering Heigl star vehicle this past Sunday.

First and foremost, I feel the need to state the obvious: 27 Dresses is a bona fide chick flick of the highest order. Guys will not like it and will take no pleasure in sitting through it. It is kitschy, corny and predictable. However, as far as chick flicks go, it is still an entertaining watch.

What The Bloggers Think:

First Sunday is a movie full of noble intentions and messages, but not a lot of common sense. It exists mainly to preach virtues, but at least unlike the heavy-handed approach of Perry, it takes its time before it gets to that point, and tries to actually tell a story. Maybe it takes a bit too much time, as it takes a good 40 minutes or so before the church actually becomes part of the plot. The movie spends too much time dealing with Durell’s personal problems, and far too much time on deadly wheelchair smugglers, that it starts to test our patience.

A star-studded cast including Katt Williams, Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan couldn’t save “First Sunday,” as the movie appeared promising, but simply couldn’t produce many laughs……..The characters were stereotypical and just not funny. The movie I had expected to be a true comedy ended up being a weak attempt at a “feel good” movie that aimed at teaching a played out lesson of right and wrong.

This isn’t a good movie, but I could see it happening, if someone with a little talent wrote these people into a completely different script and then spent the money necessary to film it, instead of cutting and pasting Polaroid photos onto construction paper and then waving it in front of a projector. But then it’s January, I suppose it was too much to expect any better.

I saw the new Ice Cube movie First Sunday over the weekend, and it was a very decent comedy. I liked the performances by Ice Cube, and I thought Tracey Morgan was funny in this film as well as Kat Williams. In addition, I liked the message of the film about forgiveness and a guy’s desire to be a father to his son.

Simply put, “First Sunday” is not a great or bad movie. It is just “ok”, although I did laugh throughout the movie. Tracy Morgan’s character “Lee John” who was abandoned as a child is the saving grace of the film. I can say that Tracy’s character actually has some depth which may result in some more film offers for him. I admire the filmmaker David E. Talbert’s zest to make films that integrate inspirational messages. However, I don’t understand the need for stereotypical images. What I’ve learned from this movie is that what is funny depends upon the audience group. If you are a fan of inspirational plays you may think this film is funny. For others, First Sunday may be viewed as nothing more than predictable humor that pokes fun and magnifies stereotypes about the Black Church and Black people.

What The Bloggers Think:

What’s most impressive about Zackham’s screenplay is not just that it avoids the ‘push-button’ tear-jerk scenes, but the way in which he actually predicts your expectation of those scenes. (Does that make sense?) In one key scene, we fully expect some sort of tearful reunion — but instead we get one of the main characters explaining that such a “Hallmark moment” could never happen. The movie’s just a little bit smarter than one would expect from a typical two-hanky older-crowd-pleaser.
It was a short movie, yet sweet throughout. It really told the story of this strong friendship, and really drove home the point that life isn’t over until it’s over. You can still accomplish, love, make friends, and laugh it up until your very last moment. Would I see it again? Maybe on HBO, and maybe starting from the middle.

We went and saw the movie “The Bucket List”. Personally I really (as an older guy) found it to be despressing! The movie ended on a sad note, which actually left me in tears - and I found Steve giving me a big hug. As we walked out - many of the people were still sitting in their seats wiping the tears from their eyes - it was an emotional and moving film - but truly one that depressed me, as I think about retiring and getting older.
This is an enjoyable feel-good movie about kicking the bucket. The message is one that considers the meaning of life, the measure of a person and the importance of vital living. Nothing gets your ass in gear like your own mortality and this movie uses dyin’ to teach us about livin’! I give this film a 7/10 and would recommend it as an inspirational drama.
She knows that she’s ill-equipped so she decides to find the best parents possible for the baby. This movie starts out like its going to be a silly comedy and ends beautifully, perfectly.

I was enchanted by the simple songs of Kimya Dawson throughout the whole movie.

So, Juno might be the best movie of the year. The combination of a smart, witty script, an engaging story, and an absolutely perfect performance from Ellen Page that all click together for a movie that just works on all levels.

I have to admit right now that this movie made me cry as well as laugh. (Yes, I’m a crybaby when it comes to sappy movies.) Deciding to give up your child for adoption is something I could personally never do and I admire the character, Juno (played by Ellen Page), for having the strength to carry through her decision. A lot of women, let alone teen mothers, can’t do that. I know it’s just a movie, but still. It happens in real life as well. And don’t say I gave it away because everyone knows that that is what the movie is about.

The relationships between all the characters really made the movie what it was though. I was surprised that everyone was so close to one another. I’ve only seen a couple of movies like that, and they were eh. But I guess independent films do it the best. Also, Juno and Bleeker were so adorable together, and the parents made me laugh way to much.

Juno. WOW! It has to be in my “Top 5″ of movies this year…closer to the #1 spot! It is a brilliant movie all around. The performance by Ellen Page is perfect (not to mention she’s gorgeous…), the soundtrack is outstanding (I rarely ever buy movie soundtracks, but this one I bought without hesitation), the directing was fabulous, but the thing I loved most about the film was the writing! “Diablo Cody”, aka Brook Busey-Hunt wrote the script (in just a couple months, btw), and it’s amazing! It’s such a refreshing style. Her “story” is pretty sweet too. She’s one person I would really enjoy hanging out with…hilarious, real, adventurous, intelligent (qualities that complement the others so well, but are so hard to come by in people these days (that are used in combination with each other)).

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I’d highly recommend it…oh and if you need even more than just my babbling, 2 words: Jennifer Garner!

The movie is wonderful. That’s all there is to say. It’s funny, but not rude. It’s sweet, but not nauseating. And it’s touching — oh dear Lord it’s touching — but effortlessly so. I loved it. And you’ll love it.

And seriously, tell me: Where can I find a girl like Juno McGuff?

What The Bloggers Think:

Beowulf is an epic poem about a hero battling monsters. It’s larger than life. In some ways, Beowulf is the original comic book superhero - he has the strength of thirty men. Then there’s Grendel, the superhuman monster Beowulf battles. One could argue that the movie, however, is a warning about the monsters of pride and prejudice. The writers have humanized both Grendel and his mother. Grendel is more misunderstood than evil, and his mother, the last of her kind, is simply trying to reproduce, which is an imperative programmed into every living thing.

You can talk about Ray Harryhausen and how Beowulf is a nod to the master special effects artist. But when I saw Beowulf at a 3-D IMAX last night, all I could think about was how the movie was influenced by video games. This may herald a sea change in the movie industry when it comes to making action scenes in epic, animated movies. For in Beowulf’s action sequences, I saw everything from the monster battles in Sony’s God of War to the infected townspeople in Resident Evil 4 (Grendel looks like a skinless video game zombie in the movie).

Beowulf was a jerk.

Not a hero. He was an ass.

He was brave and strong, but also vain and arrogant. He craved glory, but lacked honor.

The motion capture 3-D digital blend of humans and animation can come off as a mixed bag. Though swords seem to fly off the screen right into your eye sockets, or Beowulf’s bulging thighs look like they’re about to wrap around your throat while a pig roasting on a spit floats over row ten in the theater, there’s a contrasting feeling of characters whose digitalized forms are emotionally distancing. On the other hand, the actors must feel mighty pleased, in particular stocky Winstone with his body buffed and face-lifted animated Beowulf persona flexing his superhero synthetic biceps as he runs amok up on that hyperactive screen.
If you enjoyed reading The Kite Runner, you’ll love the movie. I did–and I wasn’t a big fan of the book — because of its soap opera twist and odd voice as the protagonist grows older. Not only was The Kite Runner a beautifully shot film, but it was incredibly moving to see the scenes between the two boys played out. The filmmakers have found an outstanding talent in the boy who played Hassan, the forever-loyal servant and friend of Amir.

So why do I want you to see this movie? Honestly, it’s beautifully
made. Marc Forster did a wonderful job re-creating 1970s Kabul and the
acting is just top notch. Kid actors tend to bother me, and can ruin a
movie for me if they’re too precious (the kid in Martian Child, Dakota
Fanning, etc.). The two kids they found are fantastic, they’re just so
natural and real, I was entirely convinced they were best friends. The
adults are just stellar, as well.

The other reason I want you to see this movie, is because it is just
such a universal theme. The film is about our connection to other
people and the things that bring us closer and tear us apart.

Adapted from the best-seller by Khaled Hosseini, “The Kite Runner” is an unexpectedly moving story of friendship, betrayal, and repentance. In a marketplace dominated with dreary, violent images of the Middle East, “Runner” is more concerned with communication and the regrets of life than wartime blues. It’s a nice change of pace.

While I haven’t read the book, The Kite Runner felt like a movie attempting to be honest to the content of the book. Parts were rushed over through editing, and the pace was very quick at times. However, I thought it told the story very well. While some parts toward the end seem far fetched, the first three quarters are an absolutely engrossing bit of film. The characters are not heavily introduced, but exposed enough that you could fill in your own back story if you’d like. Don’t tell me everything I need to know, but show me how things are at present, and I can infer the past. This film is a personal story, but presents Afghanistan in transition well without being political about it.

I had read Khaled Hosseini’s best seller - The Kite Runner a couple of weeks back. What struck me most about the book was the author’s style. It was not about the flair of fine literature. The sentences were simple, and they hit you hard. It was raw prose - that depicted every emotion in a crude way at face value. About the turmoil when one lives through with a horrible truth of cowardice all his life. About the frustration of trying to live up to another’s expectations. About love. Lies. Destruction of one’s land of birth. War. Humans treating other humans as animals.

Though I loved the book, I have to say I enjoyed the movie even more because the one part of the book which stuck in my mind as tedious was not included in the movie. The movie sets and characters were done so well I felt I had seen the movie before. This was because as I read a book, I imagine the scene in my mind. The Kite Runner, the movie, was bang on with my imaginings of the book.
Lightweight Oscar bait with only a lively supporting performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman to recommend it. I can’t help but think that there is an hour or so of missing footage somewhere, as this feels very slight at only 97 minutes.

Aaron Sorkin does a great job adapting the screenplay from the George Crile novel of the same name. Mike Nichols does a fine job directing the story and never lets it turn into a political melodrama. He keeps it flowing with great wit, charm and comedy. Seeing as the premise itself particularly funny, it is obviously a byproduct of the fact that the characters are all, well, unique characters.

I must say, I was completely caught off guard with Charlie Wilson’s War. I expected a stuffy, slow, agenda-driven film and instead got a well-paced, fun, enlightening movie. Even if you can’t stand movies with a political or war-related backdrop, absolutely hate the United States or are just a generally unhappy soul, you’ll find something to like here. I highly recommend it.
“Charlie Wilson’s War,” a crisp, biting satire that confidently mixes sex and politics, glides along so smartly and smoothly, it makes you wonder how it’s possible that director Mike Nichols and writer Aaron Sorkin have never teamed up before.

The film has been cut, re-cut, re-shot, re-cut, etc… but that is pretty much Mike Nichols’ way of doing things on his best and worst films. But Charlie Wilson’s War feels more schizophrenic than any Nichols film I can recall. There are worse films in his filmography, definitely. Like I wrote… I like the movie. But never have I felt so much like Nichols had no idea of what exact tone he was after, from start to finish.
Once Team Charlie gets rolling there is no stopping them.
