What The Bloggers Think:
With a nearly two hour running time, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins long overstays its welcome. A movie where the comedic highlight is two dogs making wild love does not need to be almost as long as your standard Oscar-bait epic. The movie’s climax concerns Roscoe making a surprise visit at his parents’ anniversary dinner, where he makes a heartfelt speech about love and family. Severed ties are repaired, relationships are rekindled, and the movie is over. The last part was my favorite.
Reel Opinions
Martin Lawrence is a lot like Eddie Murphy in the way he has ruined his own career with a series of very bad movies, and made people forget that at one point, he was an incredibly talented and edgy stand-up comic, able to sell out stadiums all over the country.
MatchFlick
Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins is an overlong, cliché ridden, stereotypical and predictable mess of a comedy, but somewhere under its slapstick surface is a funny movie experience. Though not a guilty pleasure by any means, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins is just overcooked in so many ways, but one can’t help laughing at this comedy from writer/director Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man).
Real Movie News
Family reunions on screen create immediate identification. We all know what it feels like to come home to our families of origin and discover how quickly those carefully-assembled grown-up personas disappear and those just-below-the-surface rivalries take over. That is why it is fun to see it happen to someone else. This set-up and a talented cast provide the engine that keeps this movie going even when the screenplay lags behind.
Beliefnet
I wasn’t surprised to enjoy Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, which I saw (and paid for) over the weekend. Even if I haven’t really been a fan of Martin Lawrence since his sitcom went off the air, I could tell the movie would be a stupid good time. I’m a not-at-all-secret fan of Mo’Nique (I was really disappointed that Phat Girlz was so tame), and I’ll watch James Earl Jones anytime, especially as a father figure (from Darth Vader to King Jaffe Joffer to Papa Jenkins). I was, however, surprised to like it as much as I did. And apparently I wasn’t the only film writer to think so.
Blog Spout
For an aggressively stupid slapstick comedy, “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins” is pretty funny. And it has some heart, wrapping a warm tale of family reconciliation in food fights, sucker punches and constant reaction shots from a tiny, goofy-looking dog.
