What The Bloggers Think:
The movie revolves around how the operation unfolds and shows Wilson’s lavish life of partying and women, as well. Julia Roberts gives a great performance as well. The movie portrays life in the 1980’s well, and does a nice job showing realistic war scenes. There is also some political humor and satirical lines that balance the serious tone of the film.
Trevor Dickerson
Lightweight Oscar bait with only a lively supporting performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman to recommend it. I can’t help but think that there is an hour or so of missing footage somewhere, as this feels very slight at only 97 minutes.
I Hate Movies
Aaron Sorkin does a great job adapting the screenplay from the George Crile novel of the same name. Mike Nichols does a fine job directing the story and never lets it turn into a political melodrama. He keeps it flowing with great wit, charm and comedy. Seeing as the premise itself particularly funny, it is obviously a byproduct of the fact that the characters are all, well, unique characters.
I must say, I was completely caught off guard with Charlie Wilson’s War. I expected a stuffy, slow, agenda-driven film and instead got a well-paced, fun, enlightening movie. Even if you can’t stand movies with a political or war-related backdrop, absolutely hate the United States or are just a generally unhappy soul, you’ll find something to like here. I highly recommend it.
The Critical Critics
“Charlie Wilson’s War,” a crisp, biting satire that confidently mixes sex and politics, glides along so smartly and smoothly, it makes you wonder how it’s possible that director Mike Nichols and writer Aaron Sorkin have never teamed up before.
Movie 24/7
The film has been cut, re-cut, re-shot, re-cut, etc… but that is pretty much Mike Nichols’ way of doing things on his best and worst films. But Charlie Wilson’s War feels more schizophrenic than any Nichols film I can recall. There are worse films in his filmography, definitely. Like I wrote… I like the movie. But never have I felt so much like Nichols had no idea of what exact tone he was after, from start to finish.
The Hot Blog
Once Team Charlie gets rolling there is no stopping them. After the introductions, clash of Charlie’s troubles in private life and political arena takes the audience into a torrent of laughter and drama that doesn’t calm until the last scene, which is also the moment you are asking yourself “Has it really been that long? I want more!”
